At ages 4 to 8, our little ones begin to see more of the world and start gaining some independence from their caregivers. They may start sleeping alone, going to school, making new friends, meeting new people, trying new things. This also means they begin grappling with complex emotions like fear, worry and anxiety. Whether it's a fear of the dark or separation anxiety, books provide comfort by showing our little ones relatable characters who experience similar fears and how they overcome them. Here are some exciting stories that help our little ones find courage! Even if they do not experience the same fear, these stories help them understand why people might be afraid of some things.

Note:

In our Recommended Reads, we try to suggest a variety of children’s books - from classics to more contemporary publications and from authors and illustrators of diverse ethnicities. There are many, many more exciting books that could be included in our list of course, but these are just some of our favourites! You can find these books at the National Library!
